Searching on this site and online seems to suggest that some mics have too low of an output to really be suitable for use with the 2i4, especially in this manner. Now I connected everything up as I was shown on the internet but my voice was extremely low in volume and in order to really be heard I had to crank the gain to the point where the sound was somewhat distorted and the background noise was very noticeable. Anyway I got myself an xlr cable (Lyx Pro LCP Quad Series) along with a mic arm, shock mount, pop filter as well as a loan of a cheap dynamic vocal mic from a friend (Behringer xm8500). I wanted to make life easier on myself and have both my audio and microphone go through my audio interface when gaming/talking etc as currently I'm still using a pretty rubbish old usb headset.
However I also do quite a bit of online gaming and spend a fair amount of time using voice chat programs such as Discord, Skype etc.

I decided to purchase a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface as it seemed like a solid choice for someone in my situation.Everything is working fine in that regard and getting to grips with amp modelling software is very fun so far. I'm an avid amateur guitar player and recently I decided to dip my toe into the world of digital amp modelling software and audio recording.
